Description

The Battle of Tarawa was the first American offensive in the critical central Pacific region. It was also the first time in the war that the United States faced serious Japanese opposition to an amphibious landing. Previous landings met little or no initial resistance, but this time the 4,500 Japanese defenders were well-supplied and well-prepared, and they fought almost to the last man, exacting a heavy toll on the United States Marine Corps.

On November 23, 1943, the battle for Tarawa would end with the USA the victors. A total of Nearly 6,400 Japanese, and Americans died in the fighting. Along with a total of 687 US sailors

These words bring me courage men, I put no trust in my bow, my swords does not bring me victory. But you brings us victory over our enemys, we will praise you forever, enough said, now move out!

Three Week wonders; that's what we called the new guys. That's all the training they got and it wasn't enough. They usually didn't last very long. No matter how much training you got or how strong you are, when you strap up and step on a battlefield for the first time, it changes you forever. Tarawa was just another strip of sand out in the middle of nowhere, but for many of us it would be the last thing we ever saw.
